now I have to see one up close - all the accent colors etc really made it look like a 'demo' more than a real car* that would be road worthy

Saw one in the flesh the other day. Looks like a mutated jelly bean. Do not like.

I'll def be swinging by BMW here in south bay - the range is what gets me on any electric car; I drove the Tesla p85 and even that range is cutting it close for me in the terms of 'would I make time to charge it' or would it make it's own time haha
I'm ~2k/month in mileage, that's at least 10 charge stops with the Tesla at ~1.5hr apiece if I'm at a Supercharger each time or a whopping 80hrs of charging on a standard outlet..

So that's the thing - I probably need to drive my current car as I would an electric; we actually have a tesla charger at the office (one model s here); so I could charge at the office, which would work quite nicely. My apartment has no real charging facility or ability to add one, though if I'm willing to hoof it, I could park at the mall a mile away and let it top off when need be.
Overall, an electric car wouldn't be a bad idea for my daily commute (I've been thinking fiat 500e) because I could travel up to the city and back on a charge; but for daily life (the random road trips I take etc) I had to go for the gas powered route. Too bad no place for 2 cars at this time (along with the bikes and other toys I'm already storing haha)
